Generally speaking, Yoga and Pilates exercise mats are much thinner than mats used for floor work for weight training or aerobics. Although the size of the Yoga and Pilates mats is a basic size of 24" x 72" the thickness may be less than 1".
Most exercise mats used for Yoga and Pilates are designed primarily as a separation surface between the floor or ground and the one performing. The flow of moves in Yoga and/or Pilates does not create sudden or harsh movements, therefore there is little chance of bruising or pain. Additionally, the mat is designed to protect the one performing the exercise from the cold floors of gyms or class rooms.
Most Yoga mats and Pilates mats are not only thin but lightweight, facilitating the ability to roll the mat up small enough to be easily carried to class. It is suggested that if you are unfamiliar with an area or are working out of doors that you place a beach towel under the mat to protect it from small punctures or scratches that may occur outdoors as well as from germs and bacteria.
